Transform Your Garage into a Functional Space

When you think about your garage, is it the last place you want to step into? Trust me, you're not alone. For many of us, the garage becomes a dumping ground for all the things we don't want to deal with, but here's the thing: an organized garage is an extension of your home. And when fall just starting, it's the perfect time to give your garage a little TLC before winter comes knocking. Seriously, there's something about that crisp fall air that makes organizing almost...fun!

So, what exactly is "garage season," and why is fall the ideal time for it? Well, it’s simple. Early fall is a great time to rotate out your summer gear and bring in the winter stuff—think cozy coats, snow shovels, and holiday decorations. Plus, by getting your garage in order now, you’ll be ready to face the upcoming colder months without feeling overwhelmed. Trust me, when that cold weather hits, you’ll be thanking yourself.

Let’s dive into how you can tackle your garage, step-by-step, so it’s no longer that space you avoid at all costs.

Clear It Out: Declutter & Donate

First things first, it's time to pull everything out of the garage. Yes, everything! I know it sounds like a huge task (and it is), but it’s a necessary one. You can’t organize clutter, right? This gives you a clean slate and a chance to see exactly what you’re working with.

When I recently helped a client clear out their garage, we were both shocked at how many items could either be tossed or donated. Old sports gear, random tools they hadn’t seen in years, and let’s not even talk about the endless piles of garden supplies. It’s amazing how much we accumulate without even realizing it.

But, here's the beauty of this step: once it’s all cleared out, you can see the space for what it is—a blank canvas. This is where the real magic happens.

Reorganize Bulky Items: Ladders, Bikes, and More

Now that you’ve decluttered, it’s time to start putting things back in, but in a more strategic way. You’ll want to start with the bulky items—those things that usually take up way too much room and tend to make your garage feel cluttered.

We moved items like ladders and bikes over to a specific corner of the garage, where they could be hung up and out of the way. Wall mounts, hooks, and ceiling storage can be a game-changer here. It’s all about using your vertical space!

Got big winter gear like snow blowers? Make sure those are in a spot where they’re easy to access. And don't forget to rotate out those summer chairs, umbrellas, and inflatable pool toys. Trust me, you won’t need them when it’s freezing outside!

Categorize & Group Like Items

The key to an organized garage is having everything in its place. After we dealt with the larger, bulkier items, it was time to categorize. Grouping like items together not only keeps everything tidy but makes it easier to find what you’re looking for when you need it.

For example, we grouped cleaning products, extension cords, and gardening supplies into separate bins. It's so much easier when you know exactly where everything is. We like to remove tools from their bulky packaging—trust me, those toolboxes and giant chests take up way more room than necessary. By grouping these items and placing them in smaller, labeled bins, we were able to free up a ton of space.

One fun tip: We designated a bin for gifts, but we didn’t label it! Instead, we gave it a super boring label, like "winter lights," so it wouldn’t attract attention. That way, you have a hidden spot to store holiday gifts without anyone snooping around. Sneaky, right?

Store Items Strategically: What’s Close, What’s Up High?

When putting things back into the garage, think about what you use the most and keep those items within arm’s reach. Highly used items like everyday tools, car cleaning supplies, and household essentials should be front and center.

On the flip side, seasonal or less frequently used items—such as memorabilia or holiday decorations—can be stored up high or further back. You’re not going to need that box of Christmas ornaments until December, so there's no need for it to be in your way during the fall and early winter.

Enjoy the Calm Before the Holiday Storm

By tackling your garage now, you’re setting yourself up for a smoother, more organized winter. No more tripping over pool noodles while you’re trying to dig out the snowblower. No more searching high and low for the box of holiday decorations. Instead, you’ll have a well-organized space where everything has its place. And trust me, that peace of mind is totally worth the effort.

Are you feeling inspired to tackle your garage this fall? I promise, once you edit out the clutter and organize the space, you’ll be so much happier. Plus, when the holidays roll around, you’ll have more time to relax and actually enjoy them.

As always, if you need extra guidance in organizing your garage—don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to help you create spaces that truly work for you. Remember, you deserve to feel good in every part of your home, garage included!

Until next time,
