How to Organize Your Closet Like a Pro: Declutter, Organize & Refresh
Closets are more than just storage spaces—they reflect our personal style, hold cherished memories, and set the tone for our daily routine. But let’s be real: an overstuffed, disorganized closet can quickly become a source of stress rather than inspiration.
So, how do you turn your closet into a space that feels functional, beautiful, and uniquely yours? It all starts with a thoughtful approach to decluttering, organizing, and maintaining it throughout the year. Let’s dive in!
Step 1: The Great Closet Edit – What Stays and What Goes
Decluttering isn’t about mindlessly tossing things into a donation pile—it’s about making intentional choices. When I work with clients, I encourage them to go through each item one by one, asking:
Do I still love it?
When was the last time I wore it?
Would I buy it again today?
If the answer is “no” or “not sure,” I take it a step further with the mirror test. Try it on! Your face will tell you everything—if you light up, it’s a keeper. If you hesitate or feel “meh,” it’s time to let it go.
And when you’re truly on the fence? Give it the "wear test." Spend a day in it and see how you feel. If you’re uncomfortable or uninspired, it’s a sign to move on.
Step 2: Organize to Make Your Closet Work for You
Now that you’ve cleared out the clutter, it’s time to organize in a way that makes getting dressed effortless. Here’s how:
Clothes – Arrange by category or color, (whatever makes the most sense for your routine).
Shoes – Store your most-worn pairs at eye level for easy access.
Handbags – Group by use (daily, special occasions) or color for quick grabs.
The key? Your closet should work for you, not the other way around!
Step 3: My Seasonal Routine – Keep It Fresh!
One of my biggest game-changers? A seasonal closet refresh. Here’s how I keep my wardrobe in check throughout the year:
April & September: I assess my wardrobe at the start of spring/summer and fall/winter. If something doesn’t fit my style anymore or is worn out, it’s time to part ways.
December: My final edit of the year. I make sure I’m stepping into the new year with only the pieces I truly love.
Doing this regularly prevents clutter from creeping back in and ensures my wardrobe always reflects my current style.
Emotions, Memories & Closet Attachments
Let’s talk about the emotional side of decluttering. We all have those pieces we cling to—the dress from a special night out, the jeans we hope to fit into again, or the blazer we wore to an important interview.
But here’s the truth: your closet should reflect who you are today, not who you were or who you might be in the future.
It’s okay to let go. That item has served its purpose, and now, it’s time to make space for pieces that bring you joy and confidence in the present.
Your Closet Should Inspire You!
At the end of the day, your closet should feel like a place of inspiration—a collection of pieces that make you feel confident, stylish, and ready to take on the world.
So, take that first step. Declutter. Organize. Refresh. And if you ever need an extra hand, I’m here to help you create a space that truly feels like YOU. Just schedule a consultation to get started!
